The title sequence starts
with evidently a man on metal industrial looking like a zombie and pushing a
civilian to death. The shot is of a high angle giving the impression within the
cinematography that the zombie is superior to the ordinary human. The typography
of ''Columbia pictures presents'' is rather dark, its red giving the illusion
that death and blood is an ongoing theme in the film as it also matches the
colour of the zombie’s cuts. The fact that the civilian being pushed is an
officer show a loss of control within the land, giving the impression that the
zombies are taking over and no representation of force can deter them.
The transition into the
next sconce is a fade out into a mid-shot of a zombie spitting blood - it comes
across as, the cycle of the zombie taking over the human body. It also tributes
other corporations in the same font keeping consistency and continuity within
the sequence. The zombie in this shot is wearing clothes, which seems stereotypically
normal to a mid-age male making it seem zombies are corrupting all minds. The
highway in the background seems to foreshadow that the setting is ongoing and
the distance in which the zombies are, is far enough to use transport.
So, far the whole of the
opening title sequence is in slow motion, which makes it seem that a lot is
occurring at the same time. The next shot is a long shot of women running with
milkshake spilling and flying in the air, the zombie is chasing her. The
iconography seems to be significant here as, the zombie is wearing old dull
colours compared to the female in pink. The female getting chased comes across
as innocent because of the pink making them come across as merciless. It can be
suggested, that this female beholds the male gaze also as she wears body-con
clothing.
The zombies then attack a
man with a sandwich board on from each side as, there are three, suggesting
that they work as a unit to succeed. The shot also gives the impression that
they are undaunted by being found as, all the previous shot are in town centers
whilst daylight occurs. A convection of the sequences is deployed when the
stars name comes up, ''Woody Harrelson''. This has been used to attract the
audience from wider areas with the shared interest of certain individuals.
Within the next shots
there is a man running from a car on fire whilst being chased by zombies
suggesting there is no form of escape. Names also came up in the same font
again but moved from one character to the other.
The reputation of the
forces occurs next- the police are holding up shields to the man with blood
spitting at them suggesting, that the blood is the way to the infection.
Another name appears, ''Abigail Brisling'' the name will stake familiarity
within the film as she has appeared in previous film such as NM’s Island and Little
Miss Sunshine.
An extreme close-up of a
wedding is evident where the bride is attacking the groom indicating that when
becoming a zombie death is an instinct and that you even kill the ones that you
love. This shows a repetition of no mercy. Then, the title appears once again
in the same font outlined by white but quite bold to capture the attention of
the audience. The font gets smashed by a behind layer of glass, which turns to
smashes. The male smashed it with a crow bar-which generally is used in
attacks, someone is chasing him indicating that obstacles are too time
consuming so weaponry door self-defense is the only form of survival.
A burlesque dancer
wearing nipple tassels is a zombie chasing business men in suits suggesting
that the zombies lure in the opposite sex just too sadistically kill them or
makes them a zombie. The setting seems rather backstreet probably because of
the idea of paid pleasure within this industry. The costume designer comes up
on this shot, which seems rather ironic as, the dancer is half naked wearing
nickers. The iconography is significant as the blood is spilling again. The
scene is also indicating that even the rich get attacked and that no hierarchy
is evident- no one is safe.
The sound throughout so
far has been quite rock, which is a key element to the genre which seems action
adventure for over 12 year olds due to the violent sciences’ mechanic is then
pulled away whilst working on a car implicating that the attack when least
expected. The next extreme wide-shot highlights that the men being chased or
zombies already are currently often men in suits suggesting they are attacking
males first possibly because they are stereotypically stronger then, the
opposition.
Even, the introduction of
children once again suggests the corruption of innocence. A male is then chased
in the woods changing the setting makes it seem there has been an invasion of
zombies everywhere.
The zombies come across
as, indestructible as even whilst of fire they still compel to carry on until
everyone has suffered. The firemen are putting out the fire on the zombies
suggests that the public services are still helping even though they are
infecting. This could suggest also, that water is a cure to the disease. The
continuing cast helpers i.e. producers.
Next, a man in with a gun
is evident shooting whilst bullets blow out in slow motion implicating that all
the zombies have resulted in humans taking action at long last to kill them. A
zombie then, falls onto a car bonnet to give the illusion that blood splatters.
The juxtaposition is the actual setting to the activity as a church is the
background. A church is significant as it symbolizes sharing and loving; the
opposite of the zombies.
The glass then breaks to
show the end of the opening title sequence. The glass seems significant as it smashing
within the disequilibrium and towards new equilibrium. Overall, it comes across
that the weaker society i.e. the not so rich characters are more prone to becoming
a zombie via the costumes as they generally embody weaker society i.e. sex
dancers and farmers (jeans and a checkered top).
